Scania trucks have long been known for their reliability, innovation and performance – making them one of the most popular brands of truck in the UK (and indeed the world).
Here at Smith Bros, we offer a range of Scania trucks, including tractor units, crane trucks, flatbeds, tippers, and many more.
In this blog, we will take a whistle-stop tour through each of them, highlighting their best traits and characteristics. We will also briefly highlight some example models to take a closer look into how they perform.
But the question is, which Scania series is best for you? There’s a range of series – the R, S, P, G, and even L series – all of which offer their own advantages and features.
Best of the Scania R series
The R series received technical and style enhancements back in 2010, when it was selected as the ‘International Truck of the Year’. These are usually larger than their P and G series counterparts. The truck includes prominent horizontal lines, LED daytime running lights and new bumpers.
A Scania R series truck comes in four cab arrangements: low sleeper cab, standard sleeper cab, high sleeper cab, and a low day cab.
Example: R450 mid lift truck
- 13 litre, 6 cylinder, Euro 6 12,740 cc engine
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR)
- 6 x 2 axle configuration and 2 pedal opticruise transmission
- 44-tonne load capacity

The Scania S series
The S series has been designed with many new features, which include a new interior layout, exterior lockers and better aerodynamics.
Scania’s opticruise transmission has been tweaked slightly in this series too, so that shifting times have been cut by 45%. These long-haul trucks have a large and comfortable cabin, a large control screen, a modern safety system and offer more visibility than other Scania models.
Example: S500 tag truck
- 2 pedal opticruise
- Single bunk with rear lockers
- Fridge, side skirts and leather seats
- Kelsa top bar with laser lamps
See more information on an S500 tag truck.
Example: S580
- 6 x 2 axle configuration
- 16,353 cc engine with 580 BHP
- Maximum towing weight of 44 tonnes
- Comes as either a standard or high sleeper truck
The Scania P series
Scania’s P series trucks have been designed to tackle the harshest environments, offering larger cabin sizes and the most robust protection against the elements. This range also offers much lower boarding steps, making it easier for drivers who need to climb in and out of the cab frequently.
There are 6 different configurations available, including a short cab, 3 sleeper cabs and 2 day cabs. The chassis can also be used for fuel tankers, mixers, dump trucks, and transporters.
Example: P250 sleeper cab
- 250 BHP Euro 6 engine
- 2 pedal opticruise automatic gearbox
- Rear air suspension
- Fitted 26’ GRP box body with 1500 kg column tail lift
See more information on a P250 sleeper cab.
The Scania G series
The Scania G series is a bit smaller than the R Series but bigger than the P Series. It comes in 4 different variations that makes it ideal for a variety of roles.
These trucks are typically used to transport liquids and fuels across long distances. They boast 2 models of 8 speed and 12 speed gearboxes, and the 2 and 3 axle chassis can be used for all types of trucks and tractors.
A smart safety system with an electronic stability program (ESP) and lane departure warning (LDW) system also comes as standard.
Example: The G450
- Excellent fuel economy with low emissions
- 12,740 cc Euro 6 engine offers
- 450 BHP
- 2 pedal, 12 speed opticruise transmission
The Scania L series
The Scania L series features a range of trucks that are suited to driving in city centres. Fuel consumption is 4% lower than previous products in the range. A special airflow design also makes them ideal for urban driving settings.
Features include:
- 9 litre, 5 cylinder engines
- 280 to 360 BHP
- 8 speed and 12 speed gearboxes
- 2 extra passenger seats in the centre of the cabin
But still, which Scania series is best?
Each model within every Scania series has its own pros and cons, depending on what you need it for. Ultimately, which Scania series is best for you will be largely influenced by the job at hand. And there is a Scania for everything!
For example, if you are planning a lot of city centre trips or need to be in and out of your cabin quite often, then the L series or P series respectively may perhaps suit your needs more. On the other hand, both the S and R series are more suited to long haul trips with heavy loads.
Whichever series you choose, Scania vehicles are some of the most highly sought after in the haulage industry, so you are guaranteed reliability and excellent performance.
